Case Study: Bankaool

From a local bank to a broader payments player

Bankaool is a Mexican bank that began its journey in 1976 as a credit union serving the agricultural segment in Chihuahua, Mexico.

In 2012, the bank transitioned into a full commercial bank before adopting the Bankaool name in 2013. Historically focused on retail customers, farmers and smaller businesses, Bankaool has more recently expanded its strategy to serve corporate clients and compete as a broader payments and banking player.

As its corporate client base grew, Bankaool needed the ability to support customers with international payments and foreign currency requirements.

Global payments were no longer a peripheral capability. They became an important part of the bank’s ability to serve its customers, win new business and grow.

Closing an international payment capability gap

As Bankaool expanded its international offering, it found itself facing a capability gap.

The bank had acquired a significant corporate client base but did not yet have the infrastructure needed to properly support those customers’ international payment requirements. Its ability to send money internationally was limited, particularly beyond the US.

That limitation created a commercial challenge. Corporate customers with international payment needs could turn to larger banks that already had the required capabilities, potentially taking valuable business and the associated fees and FX revenue with them.

Bankaool needed more than a way to process individual payments. It needed the capability to support a new phase of its business strategy and serve businesses and corporates internationally.

The timing was critical. The bank needed to expand its payment capabilities quickly, but building international payment infrastructure from the ground up takes considerable time.

A Mastercard introduction that moved at speed

The relationship between Bankaool and Corpay came through the Mastercard partnership.

Following an introduction from Mastercard in November 2025, Bankaool identified Corpay as the payments partner that could help support its transformation.

The bank went live with Corpay in January 2026, just weeks after the initial introduction.

Supporting global payments across multiple currencies

Corpay provided Bankaool with access to its payments platform, enabling the bank to process global payments and support customers’ international payment requirements.

Bankaool also uses Corpay’s Multi-Currency Account capabilities, allowing customers to send and receive payments across multiple currencies.

Today, Bankaool’s international payment activity includes USD, EUR, GBP, CAD, CHF and AUD.

The speed of implementation was particularly important. Rather than spending months developing and deploying the infrastructure internally, Bankaool was able to begin offering a significantly broader international payments capability to its customers within weeks.

From 15 payments to 2,628 in five months

The growth in Bankaool’s global payment activity demonstrates the scale of the opportunity the partnership has created.

In February 2026, the bank processed just 15 global payments. By July, that number had grown to 2,628 payments in a single month.

That represents more than a 175x increase in monthly payment volumes in just five months. More importantly, the growth represents a fundamental expansion in what Bankaool can offer its customers.

Bankaool can now support customers sending and receiving payments across a growing range of currencies and markets. This creates a new opportunity for the bank to serve corporate customers that require international banking and payment capabilities.

Building the foundation for the next stage of growth

For Bankaool, the value of the Corpay relationship extends beyond solving an immediate payments requirement.

The bank’s strategy is evolving, and its payment infrastructure needs to evolve with it. By giving Bankaool access to global payment capabilities and multiple currencies, Corpay has helped create the foundation for the bank’s next stage of growth.

The partnership helps Bankaool compete for business that previously would have been difficult to support, while giving its existing corporate customers a broader set of capabilities.

For a bank undergoing a fundamental strategic transformation, that ability to expand quickly matters.
